Leading Hotels of the World: Sterling perks on the Amex Platinum

Leading Hotels of the World isn’t a credit-card program at all. It’s a collection of more than 400 independent five-star hotels across 80-plus countries, with its own loyalty program, Leaders Club. It ends up on this site because of one line in the Amex Platinum’s benefits: Platinum and Business Platinum cardholders can enroll in Leaders Club Sterling status for free, which turns an ordinary LHW booking into something close to an FHR stay.

What Sterling status gets you

Sterling members get daily continental breakfast for two, complimentary Wi-Fi, upgrade priority at check-in, and five confirmed room upgrades a membership year that you can lock in before arrival, plus 5% bonus Leaders Club points on qualifying rates. The perks apply per stay with no minimum nights, which is why LHW prices on this site are shown per night.

The confirmed upgrades are the unusual part. Every other program on this site hedges its upgrade with “when available.” Sterling lets you confirm five of them in advance, and at a 60-room palazzo in Florence in October that is the difference between the room you booked and the room you wanted.

How booking works

Unlike The Edit or FHR, you book directly at lhw.com rather than through a card portal. Sign in with your Leaders Club account so the stay attaches to your membership and the member rate shows. Amex also made Leaders Club a Membership Rewards transfer partner in 2025, so Platinum points can top up an award stay.

Plenty of LHW properties also sell through Amex FHR; 196 of the 469 hotels tracked here were in both lists in late August 2026, and 148 were also in Bilt’s Home Away From Home. When a hotel appears in both, compare: FHR adds the guaranteed 4pm checkout and the $100 experience credit, while the LHW side may price lower or count toward Leaders Club earning.

A European list

Of the 469 LHW hotels this site tracks, at least 65 are in Italy, 25 in Switzerland, 18 in France and 15 in Spain. Six are in the United States. That is not a rounding error. LHW grew out of a group of European grand hotels and it still reads that way: Florence, Rome, Venice, Zurich and Milan are the cities with the most listings, and the American entries are a handful of resorts.

So the Platinum’s Sterling perk is worth the most to someone who travels in Europe and likes the independent hotel over the chain. For a trip that is mostly Marriotts in Miami, FHR is the better half of the same card.

Prices, and the winter gap

The median all-in nightly rate across the LHW list was about $637 in late August, and the median cheapest upcoming night about $432. Ninety-seven hotels had a night under $300 available in the coming year: the Hotel Palace Berlin at around $142 at the end of August, Sun Gardens Dubrovnik at $169 in November, the Gran Meliá Palacio de Sancti Petri near Cádiz at $160 for March, The Nai Harn in Phuket at $124 in early September, the Hotel Des Indes in The Hague at $122 for late January.

One thing the LHW tab shows more clearly than any other: a quarter of its nights in December, January and February had no rate at all, against about 15% on the Chase lists. That is Alpine and coastal hotels closing for the season, and it means the winter deals on this list cluster in the cities. If a calendar looks blank from November to March, the hotel is probably shut, not sold out.

Do I need an Amex card to book LHW?
No. Anyone can book at lhw.com and join Leaders Club at the base tier. The Platinum’s value-add is complimentary Sterling status, the tier that carries the breakfast and upgrade benefits.
Is there a minimum stay?
No. Sterling perks apply per stay, from a single night, so prices here are per night.
Why isn’t this booked through Amex Travel?
LHW isn’t a card-portal program. Stays book directly with Leading Hotels, and the perks ride on your Sterling membership rather than on where you booked.
How many LHW hotels are also in FHR?
About 196 of the 469 tracked here, in the late-August 2026 data. For those, weigh FHR’s 4pm checkout and $100 credit against the LHW member rate and Leaders Club earning.
Are these lhw.com’s prices?
No. They’re open-market meta-search estimates for spotting cheap dates. Member rates at lhw.com can differ; sign in there to confirm before booking.
